Valve Removes Free Horror Game Because it Contained Malware That Stole Users Data

Valve has removed a free horror game from Steam because it contained malware that was able to steal users’ data.

The game, called Beyond The Dark, launched in December 2024 and wasn’t particularly successful or well-rated, earning a ‘Mixed’ score based on 39 reviews.

However, one YouTuber named Eric Parker investigated the game, explaining that it contained hidden malware in a file called UnityPlayer.dll. The YouTuber, who has over 200,000 subscribers accumulated over 130,000 views on his YouTube video as of the time of writing.

You can watch the YouTube video about how the game was stealing data below:

The investigation prompted Valve to remove Beyond The Dark from Steam, although they have yet to make an official comment about why the game was removed.

The game description reads, “Trapped in a place consumed by darkness, you must stay quiet, think fast, and survive whatever lurks nearby. Search for clues, solve twisted mysteries, and navigate eerie corridors while something unseen hunts your every move. The deeper you go, the more the nightmare changes around you.”

But surprisingly, there’s nothing there that suggests it will steal your data…
