Ultimate Sackboy is the Next PlayStation Mobile Game

Sony has announced the release of its next foray into the mobile games market. Ultimate Sackboy, a free-to-play running game based on the LittleBigPlanet series, arrives on February 21.

Coming to both Android and iOS, Ultimate Sackboy is a runner in the vein of mobile titles like Temple Run. Players shift Sackboy between different lanes to avoid obstacles as he takes part in the Ultimate Games competition.

Running won’t be the only thing Sackboy and friends have to handle. According to the game’s description, each obstacle course level will take players through “epic environments” which require them to “slide, dodge and weave past classic Sackboy enemies” by swiping the screen.

The game is being developed by Exient, a studio externally licensed by Sony. The developer previously released the successful Lemmings mobile game, which boasts more than 8m downloads across all devices.

True to the inspiring LittleBigPlanet games, Ultimate Sackboy will also feature a wealth of cosmetic customization via clothing items unlocked for winning and performing well in each race. The game’s App Store description promises “hundreds of clothing varieties to collect, unlock, upgrade and check out,” with improved outfits offering higher scores in future runs.

Players can also challenge their rivals in head-to-head sprints, including Daily Duel challenges that reward various prizes.

This isn’t Sackboy’s first outing in the world of mobile games, or even as a runner. Run Sackboy! Run! released in 2014 and remains available now on the App Store and Google Play store. The older game is a side-scrolling 2D endless runner in which Sackboy sprints through levels to outrun Goo and rack up a higher score.

Those on Android devices can already pre-register for the upcoming release on the Google Play store.
