Twitch Boss Unsure if Amazon Has Already Used VODs to Train AI

Twitch Chief Product Officer Mike Minton has admitted he’s unsure if Amazon has already used VODs on the platform to train AI, following news of an opt-out option on the platform.

On August 12, Twitch revealed that, as standard, users on the platform will be opted in to Amazon using their content on the platform to train AI, including Video on Demand (VOD), live streams, and even comments.

The news has sent shockwaves through the Twitch community, and an official Twitch livestream on the topic did not alleviate any concerns.

Not Clear if Amazon Has Used VODs to Train AI

A clip from the Twitch stream, posted on X by zachbussey, shows a user asking whether VODs have already been used for AI training, which saw Minton, after a brief pause, admit he wasn’t sure.

“I don’t actually know the answer to that question, because I don’t know what Amazon has done in terms of model training and what they’ve used and not used,” he said.

Twitch’s Head of Community Mary Kish followed up by stating that opting out of the setting “removes your previously collected content from future training,” and “makes sure your content isn’t used in future generative AI training.”

However, the admission that Twitch itself seemingly doesn’t know if the setting has come too late, and whether Amazon has already scraped existing content for AI training before the setting was implemented, is a major concern.

Twitch streamers and viewers have been widespread in their condemnation of the setting, particularly as users are automatically set to an opt-in status, and many could be unaware that the setting even exists.
