Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda is getting a live-action movie.
“I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit films,” series creator and producer Shigeru Miyamoto said on Nintendo’s official Twitter account. “I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
Directed by Wes Ball, The Legend of Zelda movie will be co-produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions. It will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
This isn’t the first time word of a movie based on The Legend of Zelda has been made. However, this is the first official announcement on the matter. Up until now, it’s been nothing but rumors from various outlets. That said, seeing Nintendo move on to making a movie based on its second-largest franchise should come as no surprise after the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie earlier this year.
There’s no word on a release date for the movie as of publishing.
