The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the star-studded animated epic from Illumination and Universal, has decimated records, securing a staggering, record-breaking sum of $377 million at the global box office since its debut on April 5th, 2023.
It’s now the biggest animated movie opening of all time (beating 2019’s Frozen 2), and it’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Not only that but The Super Mario Bros. Movie is also the most popular movie to drop so far in 2023.
Super Mario Bros. Is a Towering Success
In such a short period of time, the Nintendo-backed movie has racked up some remarkable numbers, and across seventy territories, it has netted almost $400 million over a mere five-day period.
It has smashed its way past some of the most prominent releases so far this year, including John Wick 4 and Ant-Man and the Wasp, and with an all-star cast driving the project forward, there are expectations that the flick’s performance will transcend the $500 million mark with ease.
In a statement, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, the President of Distribution at Universal Pictures, spoke highly of the impeccable performance of The Super Mario Bros. Movie thus far:
It’s a phenomenal number all around. The film is based on incredible IP, which is beloved by people of different generations– young and old. This is great news for the industry.
Recently, live-action adaptations of gaming franchises have started to find their feet following years of bad press and poor performances. When 2023 opened up, The Last of Us debuted, and it has proven to be one of the most remarkable shows of its kind to ever debut, pulling in insane numbers within the last couple of months.
Later this year (and beyond), we’re set to see so many more live-action adaptations, such as the Fallout TV show, the Dead Space movie, a Street Fighter movie, and a Death Stranding film.
It’ll be a tough task for any of these franchises to snatch the crown from the head of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
