Street Fighter Live Action Movie in The Works From Legendary Entertainment

A new Street Fighter movie is currently in development and is being produced by Legendary Entertainment.

The news was announced on the official Street Fighter Twitter account but no details were revealed regarding the movie’s plot or cast with Capcom simply teasing more news to come. Legendary Entertainment has some experience in video game movie adaptations with 2019’s Detective Pikachu and Warcraft which put an…interesting spin on Blizzard’s iconic World of Warcraft series.

Despite the likes of Sonic The Hedgehog and Arcane slowly but surely turning the tide of video game movies and TV shows, fans still get understandably nervous when it’s announced their favorite IP is making the jump to the big screen. Capcom is set to work closely with Legendary during the production of the Street Fighter movie but it remains to be seen how much influence the developer will have.

Previous attempts to adapt Street Fighter have typically resulted in Disaster with the 1994 live-action adaptation sitting at 11% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is universally derided for its campy tone which remains etched in the 90s, its departure from the source material, and its overblown visual effects.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li fared even worse when it was released in 2009. While the 90s campy take on Street Fighter can fall into the ‘so bad it’s good’ territory, The Legend of Chun-Li was a monumental failure that has largely been lost to time. The bar and expectations couldn’t be any lower.

Despite its somewhat tattered reputation on film, Legendary clearly has plans for the Street Fighter franchise and according to sources from Hollywood Reporter aims to work with Capcom on multiple projects in the future. More details are sure to follow in the coming months but in the meantime Street Fighter 6 is coming to consoles and PC this summer bringing with it a new story-mode World Tour campaign and in-game commentary for the first time.

Are you cautiously optimistic about the new Street Fighter movie?
