Splitgate 2 Developer Holds Another Round of Layoffs

Splitgate 2 developer, 1047 Games, is facing layoffs again, this time to help the game return to the drawing board.

For those wondering, in a lengthy new statement, 1047 Games announced that Splitgate 2 is “going back to beta” to rework major parts of the game. This includes reworking progression, simplifying monetisation, shifting focus to classic modes, and more. However, to pull this off, the developer will have to hold another round of layoffs.

Splitgate 2 Developer Announces Role Reduction

Splitgate 2’s new statement on X reveals that “rebuilding the core experience isn’t a quick fix” but “a long-term commitment”. So, in the effort to pull this off, 1047 has taken the “incredibly difficult decision to reduce certain roles” and shift their resources to focus on the game’s rework. The impacted employees will receive severance pay and job placement support, and the developer is committed to assisting them during the transition.

Moreover, to help retain as many employees as possible, 1047 Games has decided to shut down the original Splitgate servers in a month. They would have loved to keep it alive indefinitely; however, the team is being prioritised now over the “hundreds of thousands of dollars” that have been spent to keep the servers running in the past years.

At the same time, the developers understand that the original Splitgate holds a lot of value for players, so they are exploring ways to support the game offline or implement a method for hosting “peer-to-peer matches”.

Talking about Splitgate 2 and layoffs, 1047 Games had reduced its staff just over a month ago, a few weeks after the game’s launch. The co-founders, Ian Proulx and Nick Bagamian, had “opted not to take salaries” to focus on the next phase of the project. What are your thoughts on Splitgate 2 developers announcing new layoffs?
