PS3 Emulator Allows Players to Use Physical Discs on PC

A new post reveals that players will be able to play physical PS3 games directly on their PC with a compatible disc drive.

Sony’s announcement that it will stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games in 2028 has certainly impacted the community, with many players constantly chanting ‘no disc, no buy’. While this happens in the background, a PS3 emulator has figured out how players can get their physical discs from that generation of consoles running on PC.

Play PS3 Physical Discs on PC With a Compatible Disc Drive

A post on X (formerly Twitter) by RPCS3 (via GamesRadar+) announces support for PS3 physical discs on PC. The post states ‘plug and play,’ where players will be able to “play games released as far back as 20 years ago without relying on any servers,” with the help of a compatible disc drive. RPCS3 has also provided a website listing all compatible disc drive models, along with a guide on how players can get PS3 discs running on PC.

The thread explains that recent changes to RPCS3 have enabled direct disc drive support from Windows, extending it to Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. The website informs players about the supported devices and platforms, supported input devices, PC requirements, software setup, tup and a list of compatible PC Blu-Ray disc drives. The website also provides players with a guide on how to add the games, explaining that they can use either an original PlayStation 3 console with custom firmware or a compatible Blu-ray disc drive.

Players should note that the process of running physical PS3 discs on a PC is not as simple as ‘plug and play’. Players will need to provide the disc’s decryption key to the emulator by placing it in a data/redump folder the first time. After that process is complete, they will be able to “boot the disc and it’s read and decrypted on the fly.”
