A busy year for the Pokémon franchise continues with the release of Pokémon Champions, with Mega Evolution as the first battle gimmick available in the title, as long as you have the required Mega Stones.
Mega Evolution made a return to the Pokémon franchise in 2025’s Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and while the newly released Pokémon Champions opens the door to other gimmicks like Vmax and Terrastalization later down the line, Mega Evolution is the initial focus.
If you want to know how to equip Mega Stones and Mega Evolve in Pokémon Champions, Insider Gaming has all the details.
How to Equip Mega Stones in Pokémon Champions

Before a Mega Stone can be used in a battle in Pokémon Champions, it must be equipped to a suitable Pokémon, which does mean it takes up the Held Item spot.
Changes are made before searching for a battle by adjusting your team line-up, though you can have different teams set up that include repeat Pokémon with different Held Items.

To equip Mega Stones in Pokémon Champions, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the main menu in Pokémon Champions.
- Select the ‘Box’ option on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Hit ‘X’ to open the Held Item screen.
- Select the Mega Stone equippable for the selected Pokémon, for example, Gengarite for Gengar.
- Confirm the change.
Alternatively, selecting a Pokémon in your battle line-up opens a pop-up menu, where you can choose the ‘give an item to hold’ option to open the Held Item menu, and then select the Mega Stone you want to use.
How to Mega Evolve in Pokémon Champions
Mega Evolving in Pokémon Champions must be done in the fight screen, and the Pokémon you want to Mega Evolve must be the active party member.
When in a battle with a Pokémon holding the correct Mega Stone for their species, hit the ‘Fight’ option and then hit the ‘R’ button to toggle Mega Evolution. By hitting the button again, you can deselect Mega Evolution, should you change your mind.

Mega Evolution should be used tactically, however, as you can only Mega Evolve one Pokémon at a time. However, if you withdraw a Mega Evolved Pokémon from battle, it will stay in that form.
Not all Mega Evolution Pokémon are currently available in Pokémon Champions, and you may need to purchase or unlock specific Mega Stones in the Battle Pass, through Mystery Gifts, or through purchase in the Frontier Shop.
