CDPR has learnt well from its previous mistakes and now operates on a principle of transparency, which is nothing but a good thing. Recently, the Polish-headquartered firm hosted an investor call that lasted some three hours, and during that presentation, all manner of financial information was made accessible – including the overall production costs for Phantom Liberty.
For the uninformed, Phantom Liberty is the ambitious and impressive ‘final’ expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, the 2020 rags-to-riches title that serves as one of the biggest turnaround stories in gaming history. It was revealed during the investor call that Phantom Liberty cost a pretty penny to produce, but it was almost a drop in the bucket compared to what CDPR has spent during the lifetime of Cyberpunk 2077.
How Much?!
Despite ‘just being a DLC’, it reportedly cost CDPR around $86 million to develop and market Phantom Liberty. That doesn’t really come as any surprise, considering it’s the swansong project for Cyberpunk 2077 and it boasts a strong cast, solid writing, and the release of the expansion ushered in an all-new era for the open-world epic.
However, information procured during the CDPR investor call suggests that, to date, it has cost the company almost half a billion dollars to develop, promote, and maintain Cyberpunk 2077. That would make it one of the most expensive games ever – but it’ll likely be topped by the impending release of Grand Theft Auto 6.
Recently, the news surfaced highlighting that Cyberpunk 2077 had hit a massive sales milestone, surpassing 25 million copies sold – and Phantom Liberty secured 3 million in just one week. Even three years after release, the game has no issues picking up a skyrocketing player count, but unfortunately, that’s now all she wrote for Cyberpunk 2077.
Now, fans are looking to the development of the sequel – Project Orion – which entered the conceptual design phase recently.
