The Esports World Cup’s Black Ops 7 category is unfolding right now, and this weekend, the grand champion will be crowned in Paris, France. There’s a stack of cash on the line, as well as immense bragging rights, and right now, it looks like the Challengers squads competing at the event are in with a solid chance of going a fair distance.
In the first elimination matches, we saw not one, not two, but three Call of Duty League organizations eliminated by Challengers-tier squads. To make things more dramatic, Paris Gentle Mates, Team Heretics, and OpTic Gaming could all go the same way tomorrow.
Will a Challengers Team Win at the Esports World Cup?
The Esports World Cup has proven to be a wild time thus far in Paris. It has attracted more fans than ever, and the atmosphere is electric throughout the event. It’s pushing on fast, and there are only a couple of weeks left in the showcase, but there are some seriously high-tier games yet to take to the most valuable stage in esports.
Today, four Black Ops 7 squads were eliminated from the running:
- Carolina Royal Ravens
- OMiT
- Boston Breach
- Vancouver Surge
It’s worth stressing that all but one of these teams (OMiT) were eliminated by Challengers teams. It doesn’t come as a huge surprise, as the three CDL squads kicked from the tournament were the worst-performing teams in the season that closed just weeks ago.
The most shocking loss came from Boston Breach, which failed to win a single map in the tournament before dropping out.
Tomorrow, an even bigger upset could hit the EWC space for Call of Duty fans. Firstly, the home team, Paris Gentle Mates, could be eliminated by The Pit, and second, OpTic Gaming could have back-to-back EWC dreams shattered by Project Notorious.
Team WaR could also eliminate Team Heretics, given a good performance.
Thus far, four teams have qualified for the EWC playoffs:
- Team Falcons
- 100 Thieves
- FaZe Clan
- G2 Esports
The expectation is that FaZe Clan will steal the show this year. At the recent Call of Duty League Championship, the team (under the FaZe Vegas banner) lifted the trophy on home turf, claiming the most important win of the year.
That said, the majority of Polymarket users predict that 100 Thieves will win the tournament.
