According to a new report from Bloomberg, the Nintendo Switch 2 console will launch sometime this year with an 8-inch LCD screen.
The report cites Omdia analyst Hiroshi Hayase, whose research concentrates on displays and “checks with companies in the supply chain”.
Hayase claims a new Nintendo device would “be responsible for a doubling in shipments of so-called amusement displays in 2024”.
Some fans are divided over the potential 8-inch screen size for Nintendo Switch 2. It is an ambitious size, since the current Nintendo Switch OLED only has a 7-inch screen.
While an 8-inch screen would certainly provide a lot of visual information, it could become uncomfortable to play on the go. And the mobility of the Nintendo Switch plays a large role in its continued success.
For comparison, Valve recently released a new Steam Deck OLED model in November 2023, featuring a 7.4″ diagonal display.
Many fans believed the Nintendo Switch 2 would feature an OLED screen, following the release of the current gen OLED model.
It has been praised for its visual quality, though some note it can tint over time. And some do actually prefer LCD visuals.
Also, OLED models tend to come with a steep price tag. An LCD screen could allow for lower prices, which players would appreciate.
Rumors currently suggest that the Nintendo Switch 2 console could possibly release in September.
Ai Shark issued a press release announcing that their newest software launch would coincide with the Nintendo Switch 2 in September. However, Ai Shark later stated they were “just guessing”.
Nintendo has not confirmed anything about these details.
Fans expect an update during the next Nintendo Direct, or somewhere between February and March. This would allow enough time to market the console for launch in the second half of 2024.
