Nexus Mods Plans to Add Age Verification for Adult Mods in the UK and EU

Nexus Mods has announced that age verification for adult mods will be introduced soon to the UK and EU, along with other changes to its adult content guidelines.

Nexus Mods is one of the largest platforms for PC game mods, and the website is known for hosting a wide range of adult mods. A case in point is Stellar Blade; the game’s first mods on Nexus were as NSFW as players could imagine. Now, due to the new Online Safety Act in the UK and the EU’s Digital Services Act, along with Ofcom’s guidance, Nexus Mods will modify its approach to handling adult content.

Nexus Mods Will Introduce a Host of Changes for Adult Content

Spotted by PC Gamer, Nexus Mods has released a new blog post, titled ‘The Law and Adult Content’. Starting with age verification, Nexus Mods will introduce this feature “for the majority of adult content hosted on the site”. The specifics haven’t been confirmed, but Nexus wants adult content to remain available for adults while fulfilling its “legal obligation to ensure children are safe on our website.” However, age verification is only applicable to users based in the UK and EU; other users will continue with the current approach of verification.

Nexus Mods Terms of Service will be updated to include a more detailed definition for “what counts as illegal content under UK law and how we protect children from harm whilst on the site”. This content was never allowed on the website, but the language will be tightened “to be absolutely clear”. New categorisation and tags will also be introduced. Check out the revised tags below:

  • Pornographic
  • Extreme Violence
  • Harmful substances
  • Suicide
  • Self-harm
  • Depression
  • Body stigma
  • Eating disorders
  • Swearing or Profanity
  • Sexualised

Furthermore, a new automated detection for Child Sexual Abuse Material will be introduced, which will instantly remove any content of this nature, ban the user from Nexus mods and report them to the National Crime Agency. The website is also rebuilding the existing block and mute systems to make them more transparent and more effective. As part of this rebuild, an ‘Ignore’ feature has been introduced to replace the ‘Blocked Authors’ system.

Some of the new changes on Nexus Mods are now live, and others will be rolled out gradually over the coming weeks and months. More information will be detailed in the next monthly roundup.

In other news, Nexus Mods was recently sold by the founder after 24 years of ownership. What are your thoughts on Nexus Mods introducing age verification for adult content in the UK and EU? Let us know below and join the official Insider Gaming forums discussion.
