What better day to announce a new Super Mario Bros. movie than March 10 – otherwise known affectionately in the Nintendo community as ‘Mario Day’ (Mar10…). It was revealed on social platforms by Shigeru Miyamoto that a new Super Mario Bros. movie will be released on April 3, 2026, expanding on the billion-dollar success of the first movie that was released in April 2023.
It was stressed that the movie will broaden Mario’s world, which means it could push beyond the setting of the first movie and see the iconic Nintendo character cross realms. It’s no big secret that there’s plenty of source material to work with.
Building on the Success
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a smash sensation, netting more than $1 billion at the box office and becoming the highest-earning animated movie in history. It’s still popular today and the subject of much discussion, so much so that Nintendo has decided to reveal a follow-up title is in production.
Here’s what Shigeru Miyamoto – Mario’s creator – said on Twitter:
This is Miyamoto. We are now creating a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. This film is planned for release in theaters on April 3rd, 2026 in the US and many other markets, and throughout the month of April in other territories.
We’ll let you know the details once we’re ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it!
There are plenty of characters to lean on for a follow-up title, which will allow Nintendo to expand much further and bolster the already star-studded line-up once again.
