Metro 2039 Release Window Revealed in New Gameplay Trailer

4A Games and Plaion have just released an all-new trailer for Metro 2039, the highly anticipated post-apocalyptic shooter that serves as the latest iteration in the 16-year-old franchise. It’s set to be the darkest release thus far in the already morbid and harrowing series, and it takes players back to the dank metro of Moscow to face a new and unexpected enemy.

In the new gameplay trailer released during today’s XBOX showcase, we see that much more of the game than we thought takes place above ground in the ruins of Moscow and the surrounding area. The world has been transformed by the game’s antagonist, Hunter, and it’s up to our mysterious hero to set things straight.

Metro 2039 is Coming February 2026

Metro 2039 was revealed a few weeks ago by 4A Games, around the time that a massive leak revealed a canceled version of the game. It was shelved in 2022 when the Russian invasion of Ukraine kicked off, forcing 4A Games, a Ukrainian studio, to pivot and focus on a much more hard-hitting and true-to-life story.

In Metro 2039, players assume control of a mysterious stranger outside the metro, destined to head back into the city and confront Hunter, who has become the Führer of the Novoreich, a fascist uprising. It has been years since players last heard from Hunter, who sets Artyom, the protagonist of the opening trilogy, on his quest from his home station in the metro.

Here’s the new gameplay trailer:

Metro 2039 was slated to drop ‘this coming winter’, and I was always quick to point out that this winter could also incorporate January and February 2027, which it turns out will be the case in this game.

Along with the new trailer, 4A Games offered some key details about the story, such as the fact that the game will have opportunities for above and below-ground exploration, a fresh arsenal along with classic Metro weapons, intense survival and stealth mechanics, and a burning narrative with the franchise’s core themes rooted at the heart of it all.
