Dataminers have uncovered apparent evidence that suggests in-game purchases in Marvel Rivals could be set for a huge shake-up with the introduction of loot boxes.
The Netease title has steered clear of the controversial mechanic since the initial release in December last year, although strings referencing loot boxes were found in the code previously, but plans may be on the cards to change this.
Dataminers Find Loot Box References in Marvel Rivals

Ahead of the launch of Season 4, dataminers have uncovered components for ‘Mysteries’ in the game, the codename for loot boxes in the title, including multiple references to mystery box logic. This includes ‘cosmic mysteries number’ and ‘box open history change’.
No details have been found for when a potential launch could occur, or whether any loot boxes would require premium currency, or if they would require soft currency earned within the game.
Marvel Rivals also has regular limited-time events, so it may be that the ‘Mysteries’ are tied to upcoming event plans. With Halloween season on the horizon, it certainly wouldn’t be out of the question for a trick-or-treat style loot mechanic in the game for a limited period.
Naturally, though, any possibility of loot boxes will raise concern among players due to the controversy of the mechanic, with the approach even being banned in several countries around the world.
Netease declined to provide a comment on loot boxes when approached by Insider Gaming on the matter. We’ll update this story if we hear anything else.
