AEW wrestler Kenny Omega appeared at Capcom Cup 12 in full cosplay as the upcoming Street Fighter 6 DLC character Alex to kickstart the event.
Alex is going to be the 29th playable character in the fighting game, using a wrestling-focused moveset heavily inspired by and motion captured by the former AEW World Champion.
The esports tournament is one of the most prestigious in the fighting game community (FGC), as the culmination of the Capcom Pro Tour series of events. The top four at Capcom Cup 12 will qualify for the Esports World Cup later in the year, and the winner will take home $1 million in prize money.
The 48 best players in the world from the last season are currently competing in Tokyo inside the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena, a venue Kenny Omega knows well from his days wrestling for DDT and New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW).
Kenny Omega inspires new Street Fighter character Alex
Wrestler Omega has never been shy about his love for video games. His finishing move, ‘The One Winged Angel’, is named in reference to the Final Fantasy series, and his most recent entrance music was created by Final Fantasy XIV composer Masayoshi Soken.
Omega has also always been a vocal fighting game fan and was invited by Capcom to have some involvement in their new DLC character, who was a professional wrestler before becoming a cop. However, Omega gave the publishers much more than they expected.
Omega revealed in an interview about his Street Fighter collaboration that he ended up doing the motion capture for Alex due to a misunderstanding.
Developers only wanted his permission to use some of his moves and taunts for Alex, but Omega thought they wanted him to do the motion-capture for those references. When they realised Omega was willing to bring Alex to life.
The Omega-inspired character, revealed months ago, will finally release in Street Fighter 6 on March 17 and will be purchasable either individually or through the Year 3 Character/Ultimate Pass.
