Gamescom is a place where people from all walks of life can come together and celebrate the great games being built. While most of the 400,000+ people who attend are good people, there will always be the degenerates who cause trouble. And that’s exactly what happened on Thursday night as one indie developer had his equipment stolen right from his Gamescom booth.
Ryan Laley, an independent developer working on his horror game Mimic, had a booth to showoff his game in the business area of Gamescom. Sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning, however, everything was gone.
In a post on social media, Laley said that police reports have been filed and that he was “at a loss for words” as his Gamescom has come to an abrupt end.
“It got raided last night,” an emotional Laley said. “Not just mine, others as well. All our laptops have been stolen. I don’t know.
“As an indie solo dev, this shit’s expensive and hard to do by yourself. And to have this happen is beyond frustrating. It’s heartbreaking.”
Insider Gaming understands that at least eight laptops were stolen in total.
Why anyone would do this is beyond me, but it shows that, no matter how much you want to believe, there will also be bad actors who ruin things for good people.
Insider Gaming has reached out the Gamescom organizers about the incident. Should a response be received, it will be added to this story.
For those interested in Laley’s game, Mimic, it’s an asymmetrical online survival horror game for up to 10 players. In it, you must solve various objectives, survive the killer Android hunting you, and hunt from the shadows as the Mimic, which is a shape-shifting terror hiding amongst you.
