Falcons Progress to Semis with Win Over Vitality; IEM Rio 2026 Playoffs Preview

The IEM Rio 2026 Playoff bracket has been set following the last day of Group Stage Counter-Strike action at the Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

The last day of the Group Stage came with a significant shock as Falcons defeated Vitality, to progress to straight to the Semi-Finals, meaning Vitality will start their playoffs run on the quarter-finals.

How the last day of the IEM Rio Group Stage progressed

Wednesday was a bumper day, starting with the lower bracket Semis, where G2 and Spirit took down 3DMAX and Red Canids, with Spirit shockingly dropping a map to the Brazilian roster.

In Group B, NAVI eliminated HOTU, and Aurora defeated B8, setting up yet another match between the two rosters, who played the ESL Pro League Season 23 final and in the BLAST Rotterdam groups.

Next up was the Upper Bracket finals, where Falcons shocked Vitality 2-1 in the series. While Vitality kept their Dust 2 record alive, the win ended their series-winning streak, which had been intact since BLAST Bounty when the dominant team lost to Falcons with a stand-in.

In the other group, FURIA cleanly dispatched Mouz 13-5, 13-9 despite Mouz’s clean run to the UB Final. Both rosters have struggled to find their 2025 form, but FURIA seems to be mustering all their might for their home event, advancing directly to the Semi-Finals.

The last two playoff spots were decided with Spirit taking down G2 13-7, 13-11. Later, NAVI once again defeated Aurora 2-1 to maintain their streak against the Turkish roster and progress to the Quarter-Finals.

IEM Rio 2026 Playoffs Preview

IEM Rio 2026 is one of the most scintillating brackets in a while, not least because Vitality looks vulnerable at the event. After not dropping 24 maps in a row and 18 series in a row, both streaks have ended at Rio.

Vitality seems to be somewhat shrinking under the pressure of winning the ESL Grand Slam at this event, but a Vitality under pressure is still an elite team due to their sky-high floor.

Falcons, on the other hand, seem completely free of pressure, not in small part because of the rumored roster change of Finn ‘karrigan’ Andersen replacing Damjan ‘kyxsan’ Stoilkovski.

We’ve seen that Falcons play their best in those conditions, such as BLAST Bounty when playing with a stand-in due to Maksim ‘kyousuke’ Lukin’s Visa issues. In that instance, once the Grand Final and glory loomed, the pressure returned, and they fell 0-3 to Parivision.

Falcons have shown that their individual level can challenge Vitality under certain conditions, but there’s a lot of CS to be played before we (potentially) get that rematch.

The Playoffs will begin with Mouz and Spirit, two teams that have somewhat fallen apart under the weight of chasing Vitality.

Spirit has looked abject at times at this event, still lacking any level of tactical depth, and deprived of the coach. Danil ‘donk’ Kryshkovets suffered a career low rating of 0.30 against Falcons on Mirage in their series defeat.

Donk later clarified on Telegram that he was feeling unwell at the event, but they’ll need him at his best in playoffs to make any progress.

MOUZ looked more like themselves after a poor exit at ESL Pro League Season 23 was followed by a last-place finish at BLAST Rotterdam. Wins against Legacy and Aurora were somewhat dampened by a devastating loss to Furia, who blew MOUZ out of the server wholesale.

With Falcons waiting in the Semis, a Semi-Final berth seems possible for MOUZ if they can recapture their usual stable level, but going beyond that seems unlikely when they look so vulnerable in comparison to 2025.

For Vitality, the path will really test whether they can return to form. A quarter-final against NAVI would have to be followed by a battle against home favourites FURIA.

FURIA have returned to a decent level in Rio. It seems the roster has been well prepared for the event, wanting to put on a good show for their home fans.

That is not unequivocal; however, the roster was within a whisker of losing to NAVI in the Group Stages, still looking far from the late-2025 level that saw them capture four trophies.

But when 15,000 Brazilian fans are wildly cheering your every kill on, one hopes that FURIA can use that energy and momentum to give anyone a challenge.
