Progressing in Blue Prince is tied to several decisions and items, Keys being one of them. Not every door is open, and Keys can also unlock chests to find handy resources to complete the game.
Blue Prince‘s roguelike elements mean you must diversify your approach each time you enter Mt. Holly. Whereas the layout, items, and conditions can change, the gameplay loop doesn’t—finding Room 46. You must systematically chart out an efficient route to the end goal to do this.
Obstacles are guaranteed to prevent you from having an easy journey: Locked doors, limited resources, and Steps. When it comes to limited resources, look no further than Keys.
How to Get More Keys in Blue Prince

You can find Keys in the Drafted Rooms, lying out in the open, as a reward for completing minigames, as Constellation bonuses, and by buying them in Blue Prince.
Constellations
The Observatory is a room in Blue Prince. As the name suggests, it’s a room with a gigantic telescope and a hole in the roof to look through. If you get the telescope into the right place by jimmying the wheels, a reward awaits—a random one.
If you’re lucky, the “Clavis, the Key” Constellation will appear, which gives you +1 Key.
Drafting Rooms
The Closet usually has 2 Items (one of which can be a Key), and I’ve had +1 Key in the Nook and Storeroom. The great thing about this method is you are guaranteed a Key if you draft a room with the Key symbol!
Exploring
I can’t think of specific rooms where I’ve had a random key, but I can confirm Keys appear now and again in different rooms at random. It’s usually in rooms that don’t advertise a feature beforehand. Thoroughly checking every room in case it features an Inventory item or Consumables is a general rule to live by.
Locksmith
The Locksmith room advertises “Keys for Sale” in exchange for Coins. You find Coins throughout Mt. Holly, so be careful to save them in case you come across the Locksmith and need a key, but be wary of the Chapel, which takes one Coin away from you every time you enter it.
Minigames
I’ve found two minigames in my experience: The Parlor Game and Darts Puzzle in the Billiards Room. Completing these usually rewards you, giving a Key a chance to appear.
These are all the methods I’ve found so far, but more might lie in wait!
What do Keys do in Blue Prince?
Keys unlock doors and trunks in Blue Prince.
Trunks require a single Key to open and contain a nice goodie inside. It might be worth it if you’ve collected a few Keys along the way. Locked doors are the main reason to collect Keys. It’s conceivable your only route forward in Blue Prince is via a locked door. If you don’t have a Key, you’d better rest for the night and start again.
I recommend you get a Key or two as early as you can.
