Call of Duty Warzone was once the hottest battle royale shooter on the market. Activision’s free-to-play shooter might have even eclipsed Fortnite at one point. However, the shooter landscape has changed drastically, and so has the Call of Duty and Warzone player count.
First there was DayZ, then PUBG, and Fortnite eventually took over the world. The battle royale genre belonged to Epic Games. That was until Activision decided its FPS dominance wasn’t enough. During 2019’s Modern Warfare, Activision’s shooter stranglehold extended to battle royale as it launched Call of Duty Warzone.
Warzone became the thing for a long time. The years have passed, and Fortnite has regained its crown, and Warzone has cooled. Let’s see where the FPS stands in today’s climate.
CoD Warzone Player Count in 2025

There’s no accurate data specific to Call of Duty Warzone, but using Call of Duty’s Steam Charts page as a basis, February 2025 saw an average of 54,575 players playing Call of Duty titles—with a peak of 101,760.
There are a few things to dissect here. Firstly, there is still no software or statistical tracker to accurately obtain console player data for games. The closest thing we can get is either sales figures as an approximation, or if the developer or publisher posts about player numbers on social media.
Steam is the only platform with reliable player-tracking technology. Secondly, the last few years have seen CoD converge into one super Call of Duty hub. Steam’s Call of Duty Steam figures are not representative of any one game: It’s Warzone 2, Black Ops 6, Vanguard, and the Modern Warfare reboots.
However, we can still use existing data to get a good idea of where Warzone stands. When Black Ops 6 released and really got going in November 2024, figures hit 165,668 players on average for the month—reaching a high point of 313,313. A lot of this is because of Black Ops 6 though, and Warzone’s popularity was dwindling, even with the BLOPS 6 integration.
If we go back two years to November 2022, the simultaneous launch of the Modern Warfare 2 reboot and Warzone 2 saw a staggering 223,897 players playing CoD on average, with an all-time Call of Duty Steam peak of 488,897 players. Warzone 2 reportedly accumulated 25 million players in five days.
However, Warzone 2 lost a ton of players quickly due to negative reception, and the Call of Duty peak player count dropped by two-thirds within two months—down to 167,294 by January 2023.
There isn’t much in the way of Call of Duty Warzone historical data to show us original Warzone numbers. But every streamer and their dog played Warzone between 2020 and 2022, and players have since moved onto Marvel Rivals, Overwatch 2, Apex Legends, and Fortnite continues to rule the roost.
Is it Worth Playing Warzone in 2025?
Warzone is not what it was, but fresh updates and the return of Verdansk make Warzone 2 worth a go in 2025.
The battle royale title has a multitude of maps across standard BR, Plunder, and Rebirth. It has tons of weapons and all the classic nuances that have made Warzone endearing over the years. However, Warzone in 2025 is an eye-opening shooter for one big reason—Verdansk coming back.
Activision confirmed in 2024 Verdansk was returning, and it’s more than likely a desperate effort to bring old-school players back that have since moved onto pastures new. If Verdansk doesn’t spark a revival, there’s every chance Warzone might be shut down for good.
If you don’t play it in 2025, you may not be able to play it in 2026 as there won’t be a Warzone 2 or Warzone 3!
Keep up with updates on Black Ops 6 and Warzone 2 Season 3 for the latest. Rumors suggest 2025’s Verdansk is “Pretty much the OG March 2020 version.” Is this enough to tempt you back? Or is Warzone inevitably heading for a permanent destruction of Verdansk this time?
