Where were you when Grand Theft Auto V hit store shelves? The initial launch in 2013 was one of the most hype video game releases of the time. It brought out the masses at GameStop for a midnight release, which was still a thing then. Here we are, waiting for the next title, but more than a decade later. So, how long has GTA 6 been in development?
When Did GTA 6 Development Begin?
A few years ago, it was revealed that GTA 6 development started in 2014, just one year after the launch of GTA V and GTA Online. Unlike past titles, however, Rockstar Games intends to tread carefully with its upcoming Grand Theft Auto storyline. It wants to avoid trampling on marginalized groups through the series’ long-standing trend of occasionally harsh jokes.
We’ll likely see some significant overhaul to Grand Theft Auto Online with Grand Theft Auto VI, though nothing has yet been confirmed about the multiplayer component. Every GTA since Grand Theft Auto IV has featured some form of multiplayer, from small lobbies in Liberty City to the massive scale of GTA Online over the past decade. Hey, maybe they’ll go full MMO?!

Who Are the Main Characters in GTA 6?
We know the game features two main characters: Lucia and Jason. We’ve seen more of Lucia, a Latina criminal who will take the leading role in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto game. Jason, on the other hand, appears less often in marketing materials. He’ll likely provide the old-school GTA experience that so many players are accustomed to.
Furthermore, there’s no indication that we’ll see Michael de Santa, Franklin, or Trevor in Grand Theft Auto 6, unfortunately. None of the three previous protagonists were shown off in the trailer, though it’s not out of the realm of possibility. I can see Michael or Franklin appearing in Leonida to lay low from the heat in San Andreas.
