The best way to keep track of your location in Hollow Knight: Silksong is to use the compass that places you on the map.
The world in Silksong is filled with many different paths and sections, making it very easy to get lost. If you are trying to find your way, being placed on the map is so much better than working it out yourself.
Here is how to get the Hollow Knight: Silksong compass and find out where you are on the map.
How to Get and Use the Compass in Hollow Knight: Silksong

Starting off, obtaining the compass in Hollow Knight: Silksong is pretty straightforward. All you need to do is buy it from Shakra, the warrior bug who also sells you maps for each section. While you can easily run into her in the early portions of the game, she does appear in every other section as well. If you are having problems finding her, listen for her singing to know you are in the right room where she is located.
When you find her, the compass will cost 70 rosary beads. This is the main currency in Hollow Knight: Silksong, which is left behind with your body when you die. Work on saving up enough and purchase it.
Unlike the other items that you buy from Shakra, you will need to manually equip the compass in the tools section of your inventory before it actually works. It’s a bit odd that it doesn’t automatically work, but the compass is much more useful than the shard pendant, so we would definitely recommend equipping it, at least in the early game. Later on, when there are more tools to contend with the compass, we’re not sure of as of this writing.
Other Tips for Using the Map
In Hollow Knight: Silksong, the compass partnered with the various maps in the game is not enough for you to learn everything about the areas you are traveling. When you have the rosary beads saved up, we highly recommend you also buy the quill and bench pins as soon as possible.
The quill will work to fill out more of the map for you as you explore the area that the map is focused on. The downside here is that it only fills out the places you have been when you sit at a bench. That is a pretty dumb stipulation, but we have to work with it. Bench pins will mark the location of benches, which obviously work to keep you healed and moving forward.
In all honesty, the more of Shakra’s items you buy, the better off you will be. The more info you have about your surroundings, the more you will be set to take on Hollow Knight: Silksong’s many challenges.
