Warner Bros. Games has announced that Hogwarts Legacy sold 22 million copies in 2023. Of those 22 million, 2 million were sold in December.
The news of the game’s sales accomplishments comes alongside a new interview with Variety where Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad praised the game’s release and the developers behind it.
“It brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story,” he told Variety. “And that’s what the team at Avalanche set out to do when they were developing the game and I think that’s really why it resonated so well and remains the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide. That’s a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent’s sequel games and we’re so proud that we’ve been able to break into the top ranks.”
The success of Hogwarts Legacy comes despite the continued controversies surrounding Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling. Despite being well-received by players and most of those who reviewed it, the game received no major awards post-release.
First launched for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S last February, the game sold over 12 million copies in its first two weeks alone. Since then, the game has been released on the Nintendo Switch as well as last-gen PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
