Halo Infinite is Being Pulled From The HCS, Leaving Fans Wondering What Comes Next

Halo Infinite has been the competitive platform of choice for Halo esports since 2021, when it brought the landscape back from a hiatus that had lasted almost three years. It was a turning point that saw the biggest organisations in the industry break back into the Halo scene, but now the future of that scene is under threat.

In a recent announcement, it was confirmed that after the Halo World Championship takes place in October, Halo Infinite will be retired from the Halo Championship Series. While the HCS has vowed to ‘support’ the tournament scene, fans have no idea when the top-tier ecosystem will be back, and what game it will be built around.

‘We Feel This is the Right Time’

The announcement was posted on the Halo Waypoint blog by Tahir ‘Tashi’ Hasandjekic, Director of Competitive Engagement at Halo Studios. He wrote:

Over the next few months, the HCS will host the 2 planned Majors as well as the almost sold out and highly anticipated Halo World Championship on October 24-26. Once a world champion is crowned in October, the HCS will be retiring Halo Infinite from Official HCS Competition. This means we will still support Halo Infinite and the tournament scene in 2026, but HCS will be moving on from Halo Infinite for official competition following this year’s Halo World Championship.

As the studio continues to shift more and more towards the next era of Halo, we feel this is the right time for Official HCS Competition to move on from Halo Infinite. Year 4 will be the final Official HCS events for Halo Infinite, and now’s your last chance to be part of this momentous chapter of Halo esports history.

This sent some fans into a frenzy, with the most die-hard Halo esports enthusiasts wondering if we’re about to have years of radio silence. It seems bizarre to some that the Halo Championship Series organisers would abandon Halo Infinite without having a succession plan in place, which has prompted many to assume that the next game in the series is much closer than we think.

Tashi spoke positively about the scene he’s preparing to pull the plug on:

We’re just a few months away from closing out the 4th year for Halo Infinite – the longest a single Halo esports title has held major competition. And after all this time, players continue to wow us and put on a show for the entire community, and the level of competition continues to rise.

It was confirmed that tournaments will still surface for Halo Infinite, Halo 5, and MCC, and that the Halo Championship Series team will continue to support them, but the HCS itself just won’t have a foundation for the time being.
