In a recent panel that was held at CES 2024, Sony’s representatives confirmed that writing is now underway for the live-action adaptation of God of War. In recent years, Sony’s push into bringing PlayStation franchises to life on the big screen (or the small screen) has proven to be a huge success, with several brands such as Uncharted and The Last of Us being a hit with fans.
It was also highlighted by Katherine Pope, the President of Sony Pictures Television, that the Horizon Zero Dawn production that’s being worked on at Netflix is also being written as we speak.
Loving Live Action
It can be said that many modern PlayStation-exclusive games are interactive movies with how they’re written. Some of them feature near-unbroken flows, bursting at the seams with cinematics and featuring some of the best voice acting in the business. They essentially write themselves when it comes to a live-action adaptation, which is more or less what happened with the likes of HBO’s The Last of Us, which debuted in 2023 to an overwhelmingly positive reception.
In The Last of Us, the story of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsay) is reimagined, but for the most part, it’s a like-for-like replication of the 2013 game of the same name.
Recently, Gran Turismo, Uncharted, and Twisted Metal all found their way onto a cinema or television screen – and now, God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn are being prepped to join them. Here’s what Katherine Pope had to say about the production of these projects during the Sony panel at CES 2024:
We’re also delighted to have writing underway on two new IP-based projects God of War for Prime Video and Horizon Zero Dawn at Netflix. Those are coming along with a few other highly anticipated series, including the fourth season of The Boys, and the final season of Cobra Kai.
Now, fans will be left to wonder who will assume the starring roles for these productions. Will the role of Kratos be handed to the likes of Dwayne Johnson, or will it be Christopher Judge who reprises his performance of the legendary Spartan? In the Horizon Zero Dawn project, could we see Rose Leslie, who bears a stunning resemblance to the lead character Aloy, take centre stage?
