It has just been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that a full-fledged television show based on the iconic PlayStation franchise, God of War, has been greenlit by Amazon Studios. Reportedly, it’s a two-part effort between the likes of Sony Pictures Television and Amazon themselves, and it’ll be produced in collaboration with PlayStation Productions.
According to the report, the series has been in development behind closed doors since March. It was revealed that the God of War TV show will be based on the latest releases in the game franchise, depicting Kratos and his ‘estranged son’ as they undertake a journey to spread Kratos’ late wife’s ashes.
Did We See It Coming?
For years, video game adaptations have been gathering steam in the realms of film and television. From the big-screen renditions of Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, and Sonic the Hedgehog to television shows like The Last of Us and Fallout, it’s becoming an increasingly popular trend to take top-tier gaming franchises and recreate them in a live-action setting.
Now, the God of War TV show will join that line-up.
In a statement published as a part of The Hollywood Reporter’s article, Sony Pictures TV President, Katherine Pope, spoke highly of the announcement:
We are so proud and excited to be working with our friends at Amazon Studios and our partners at PlayStation Productions to adapt this beautiful and heartbreaking game into a premium live-action series.

As per the reveal, the God of War live-action adaptation will be driven by the likes of Rafe Judkins (Wheel of Time), and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man, The Expanse).
There are extremely high expectations for the franchise, but now the important questions begin to surface. Most importantly, fans will now launch into a somewhat explosive debate over who should be cast as Kratos and – assumedly – Atreus.
