Fortnite has gone through several periods of evolution over the news, but a major patch on May 14 is bringing wholesale changes to Zero Build.
The Epic Games mode has become a popular approach in Fortnite for players who don’t want to deal with the complexities of the build mechanics, and the May 14 update is an experimental one, making significant changes to Zero Build.
If you want to see details of all the Zero Build changes in Fortnite, Insider Gaming has you covered.
All Fortnite Zero Build Changes

Fortnite has seen some major adjustments made to Zero Build for the final weeks of Season 2, with the experiment set to impact the future of the game.
Landing alongside the huge Overwatch collab, new items have been added to the loot pool, providing more defensive and utility items in rotation. Additionally, there are new Zero Build exclusive items, Improved Smokle Grenades and Brick-a-Bunkers.
There are also no more fall damage eliminations, as lethal fall damage has been removed. Now, a would-be fatal fall triggers a ‘Splat’ animation, dropping your health to 1 HP and removing all shields and overshield.

All of the Fortnite Zero Build patch notes are below, courtesy of Epic Games:
- New ‘Pocket Items’ have replaced the old Build button. Pocket Items are unlimited-use utility items with cooldowns; you start every match with one equipped and can swap at Vending Machines around the map. Shockwave Grenades, Med Mist Grenades, and Shield Bubbles are the three Pocket Items available at launch.
- All players now start matches with a Pistol, a Small Shield Potion, and their Pocket Item.
- You can now rush to the ground from the Battle Bus. Instead of auto-deploying your Glider near the ground, you can manually cut it and free-fall the last stretch. Be careful!
- Glider Redeploy returns from elevated positions for cleaner rotations across the map.
- Holding your Pickaxe grants unlimited Stamina so you can cover ground without burning out.
- Eliminations now restore your Overshield, rewarding aggressive play.
- Environmental structures now take significantly less damage from weapons. A boulder, a tree, a random shed will all now hold up as much better cover.
- Reboot Van timers have been reduced so you can get the squad back in faster.
Are The Zero Build Changes Permanent?
No, the changes made on May 15 in Fortnite’s Zero Build are not permanent, instead serving as an ‘experiment’ for the future of the mode.
Zero Build is themed around “pure gunplay”, and Epic Games wants to “push that identity further,” with the experiment bringing in significant changes for the remainder of Season 2.

Player feedback will shape how Zero Build will be adjusted next season and beyond, and for other Battle Royale modes, showing that Epic Games is ready for a full identity change of the mode.
More details will be shared in future and it remains to be seen how these wholesale changes impact the mode.
