PC Gamers Spent $1 Billion On The Epic Store in 2023

In a ‘year in review’ document published recently, Epic Games outlined the performance of its PC-based storefront through 2023. It was revealed that gamers spent a whopping $950 million on the Epic Store over twelve months – with $310 million of that being on third-party PC games on the store.

In 2023, Epic Games recorded substantial growth in MAUs, rocketing up to 75 million MAUs in December 2023, a year-on-year climb of around 10%.

Epic Money

Epic Games’ PC storefront is fast becoming the most popular place to buy and play games on the platform. It’s rivalling Steam – Valve’s legendary launcher and storefront – and that’s mostly because of the ‘free games program’ that Epic Games boasts.

In 2023, Epic Games gave away 86 free games, which were collectively claimed a whopping 586 million times by the community. It was stressed that this equalled a total of $2,055 in totally free content – which is an attractive enough reason to use the app.

At the top of the table for the Epic Store in 2023 sat the following games:

  • Genshin Impact
  • Rocket League
  • Dead Island 2
  • GTA 5
  • Fortnite

Coming in second place were the likes of:

  • FIFA 23
  • Red Dead Redemption II
  • Alan Wake II
  • LOTR: Return to Moria
  • Hogwarts Legacy

With the numbers out of the way, Epic looked to 2024 and what’s coming next for the platform. It was highlighted that a new download manager tool is on the way, and ‘offline mode’ is getting a significant upgrade. There will be pre-load features made available for pre-ordered games, and the (re)launch of Epic on iOS in Europe after a hiatus that has lasted one hell of a long time.

Did we read the same year in review article? Customers spent considerably less on third party games compared to 2022 even though they’ve removed the curation process for games, even the amount of free games redeemed went down.
