Can you play The Outer Worlds 2 in multiplayer with a friend? Sure, the original title was a solo experience, but there are many times when a sequel game has gotten the multiplayer add-on.
Once this game hits Game Pass, there’s going to be a lot of people jumping in to explore the galaxy and witness some dumb humor along the way.
But can you do all of that with a friend? Here is the answer to whether or not The Outer Worlds 2 has any multiplayer modes.
Does The Outer Worlds 2 Have Co-Op?

No, there is no cooperative play in The Outer Worlds 2, and there very likely never will be.
From start to end, your journey in The Outer Worlds 2 will be solely decided by your choices and actions. While no human minds will be around to add to that experience, there are AI NPCs that you will talk with and interact with in various ways. Some of these will become companions that you can form a deeper friendship with, or you can go the other way and make them mad enough that they leave you.
The only real chance you have at playing The Outer Worlds 2 with a friend is if someone online makes a co-op mod for the game on Steam, but who knows if anyone would do that.
Why Doesn’t The Outer Worlds 2 Have Multiplayer?
The Outer Worlds 2 is a single player adventure through and through. There is no multiplayer functionality in the game whatsoever.
Like the first game, The Outer Worlds 2 has been built with the sole purpose of being a single player action RPG that has you interacting with AI NPCs. Along the way, you will make your own journey, which will likely be different from other players’ adventures in the way that your interactions change. To sum it up as simply as possible, The Outer Worlds is like Fallout: New Vegas (a game from Obsidian’s past), but in space and with a little more humor.
While it could be fun sharing that kind of experience with a friend, that is just not the kind of game Obsidian Entertainment has set out to make. We know they can do co-op well with both Grounded games, but like Avowed, which also released earlier this year, there’s no push to force a cooperative experience into the game.
Do you still plan on enjoying The Outer Worlds 2 even without any multiplayer support? The first game is great, we recommend giving the sequel a try. Either way, let us know in the comments or on the Insider Gaming forum.
You know how everything is getting more expensive? Luckily, The Outer Worlds 2 had its price cut before release. The original price choice was not on Obsidian’s end.
