Disney is aiming to create “something truly exceptional” in its partnership with Epic Games, as the House of Mouse pushes on in creating an immersive world filled with iconic characters.
Back in February 2024, Disney spent $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games, kicking off a multi-year project to create a “persistent universe” where fans can “play, watch, shop, and engage with content.”
Few updates have been shared since, with work going on quietly behind the scenes, but more details about Disney’s ambition have now been revealed.
Disney Aims To Create ‘Something Truly Exceptional’
In a video and an accompanying blog post detailing the growing importance of the game industry for Disney and it’s plethora of IPs, Sean Shoptaw, EVP of Global Games and Digital Entertainment, detailed what the company is aiming to achieve in the Epic Games collaboration.
“Our partnership with Epic is a really important one. What Epic has built with Fortnite has really created one of the most important social entertainment platforms in the world, and certainly for us, we see a ton of opportunity to bring our great characters, stories, and worlds into that universe and build something truly unique to Disney,” he said.
“Our ambition is to create something truly transformational. A space that people can come play, watch, and create, and a space that we bring all of Disney together in one connected universe.”
Disney’s ongoing partnership has seen many major collabs with Fortnite in recent years, including the major crossover with The Simpsons in 2025, while it’s widely believed that Kingdom Hearts will make an appearance in Chapter 7 Season 4.
We’re still awaiting full details on a release window for Disney’s persistent universe, though more details could emerge in this weekend’s D23 event.
