The world of Diablo will continue to grow, and cinematic shooting for the fifth main entry in the series has begun, a director has revealed.
After the original title launched in 1996, Diablo fans have been treated to a slew of major sequels, the most recent of which was 2023’s Diablo 4, and now it’s been revealed that shooting for the next entry has begun.
Diablo 5 Shooting Has Begun
Posting an image on X, Neil David Carter, Cinematic Director for the Diablo series, captioned an image of a studio as the ‘first shoot’ for the game, using the Diablo 5 hashtag.
The reveal comes off the back of Blizzard Entertainment’s official announcement of Diablo 5 during BlizzCon 2026, with a planned release window of Spring 2029.
Diablo 5 will be a direct continuation of the story in Diablo 4, taking place roughly one century after those events, and the story is described as a “dawn apocalypse” where Diablo has already won and conquered Sanctuary.
One major change is the move away from Diablo 4’s continuous, open-world design, as the next title will feature fully procedurally generated overworld maps and dungeons, said to be similar in philosophy to Diablo 2.
Classes have already been confirmed, with Demon Hunter and Monk returning alongside the debut of a new class, Plague Knight, focused on spreading and consuming disease.
It’s still very, very early days in Diablo 5’s development, and the release window could be subject to change with adjustments or delays, but in the meantime, Diablo 4 is still going strong, despite the initial delay of the launch of Season 15, which is the big anniversary season for the game.
