Couple Who Created A Fake Esports Career Both Sentenced To Prison

A couple who cheated at esports tournaments together have been sentenced to six months in prison by a court in Thailand.

In one of the biggest scandals in esports history, it was discovered that the pro career of Warasin ‘Tokyogurl’ Naraphat had all been a lie.

Tokyogurl was representing Thailand in Arena of Valor at the SEA Games but was caught cheating by sharing a Discord screen and having her boyfriend, another esports pro, play for her remotely.

The tournament was being held in Thailand and the cheating scandal was a major embarrassment for the host nation.

After admitting to cheating, both Tokyogurl and Cheerio were arrested back in February and faced a potential maximum of two years in prison and $1,200 fines each.

This week, the court handed them both a six-month jail sentence for violating the Computer Crime Act and damaging the reputation of Thailand in esports.

However, that sentence has since been reduced to three months in detention facilities instead, as the duo confessed to the scandal.

Tokyogurl’s Web Of Lies

Before she was caught cheating in tournaments, Tokyogurl had built up a rather successful esports career in a short span of time.

She had become a popular streamer, presumably while still having her partner Cheerio play for her.

Cheerio himself had previously competed in Arena of Valor at a high level, but his career had reached a standstill before he became involved in the scandal.

Tokyogurl was eventually signed for Taiwanese esports organisation, Talon Esports, who she represented at various tournaments and regularly practised with under the guidance of Talon’s staff.

That then earned her a call-up for Thailand at the SEA Games, a tournament where the nation had qualified for the final but had to bow out of the competition once Tokyogurl was caught.
