Can You Use Switch 1 Controllers on Switch 2— All Compatible Accessories

Dozens of accessories were introduced throughout the original Nintendo Switch console’s eight-year lifespan, and some can be used on Switch 2.

United States Nintendo fans feared that the Nintendo Switch 2 would be more expensive due to tariffs. That didn’t happen as the console remained at $449. However, accessories did experience price adjustments, making them more costly than initially planned.

As a result, it makes sense for some users to use their old accessories, so they don’t need to make many unnecessary purchases.

Here are all of the official compatible accessories.

  • Joy-Con Controllers
  • Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  • Nintendo Entertainment System Controller
  • Super Nintendo Entertainment System Controller
  • Nintendo 64 Controller
  • SEGA Genesis Control Pad

The Joy-Con Controllers can be paired wirelessly to the Switch 2, but they cannot be attached to the system, meaning you will need a Joy-Con charging grip or charging stand to charge them.

The Switch Pro Controller can be used wirelessly and charged by connecting it to the Nintendo Switch dock with a USB cable.

Meanwhile, the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and SEGA Genesis Control Pad can all be used by pairing wirelessly, and can all be charged by connecting them to the Switch 2 dock with a USB cable. The NES controller can be paired wirelessly, but can not be attached.

What is The Difference Between Switch 1 & Switch 2 controllers?

There are a few key differences between the Switch 1 and Switch 2 Pro Controllers and the Joy-Con 1 and Joy-Con 2 controllers.

The Switch 1 Pro Controller can’t turn on the Switch 2. Additionally, the Switch 2 Pro Controller features two re-mappable buttons on the back, a C button for game chat functionality, and a headphone jack for connecting wired headphones to the controller.

The GL and GR buttons can be switched to any controls you see fit. The Switch 2 Pro Controller also features a distinct ergonomic design.

If none of those new features sound worth it, you can still use your original controller on the new system.

The Joy-Con 2 Controllers have larger analog sticks, longer shoulder buttons, and wider SL and SR buttons than the original Joy-Con controllers. The Joy-Con 2 controllers also have a built-in magnetic attachment, a C button for game chat, improved HD rumble, and can be used as mice for compatible games.
