Can You Dual Wield in Oblivion Remastered?

Oblivion Remastered is a like-for-like retelling and reimagining in many ways. The content is largely the same; it’s the same beautiful soundtrack, but changes have been made. Dual Wield fans are very curious to see if Oblivion Remastered has drastically altered the gameplay.

If you ever played Oblivion back in 2006 on Xbox and PC, 2007 on PS3, or at any time since, Oblivion Remastered feels like home. Booting up the remaster is like I never left Cyrodiil in the first place. Yet, here we are nearly 20 years later, and one of Bethesda’s most iconic RPGs is back and feels familiar.

Many things we love about Oblivion are still here: The Arena, the Adoring Fan, and the patience-testing lockpick mini-game. So let’s see if a proper Dual-Wield system is present.

Is Dual Wield in Oblivion Remastered?

Dual wield is not possible in Oblivion Remastered, so you can’t use two primary weapons at the same time.

Oblivion is quite strict with its combat. The closest you’ll get to Dual-Wielding weapons is having a one-handed weapon equipped alongside a shield. But the shield isn’t used as a weapon, so it’s not technically Dual Wield.

There’s also an element of Bioshock here as you can equip a main weapon, but also use another input to shoot magic out of the same arm. Again, you can’t swing a weapon and cast a spell simultaneously—so it’s not genuine dual wield.

Why Isn’t Dual Wield in Oblivion Remastered?

There’s been no confirmation as to why Dual Wield isn’t in Oblivion Remastered, but the likeliest reason is because developer Virtuous wanted to keep the RPG authentic to its roots.

We’ve extensively covered the main differences between the OG Oblivion and the remaster.

There’s a ton of new dialogue, new Quests through the Deluxe Edition, and various quality-of-life improvements. But Dual Wield is a drastic combat style change. This would require a major overhaul of the mechanics, so for the time being, I wouldn’t expect to see it anytime soon in Oblivion Remastered—maybe at all.

Will Dual Wield be Added to Oblivion Remastered?

We can’t say if Bethesda will add the ability to Dual Wield to Oblivion Remastered, and it remains to be seen if Virtuos adds any new content post-release.

Oblivion Remastered boasts a great player count, it’s likely sold many copies, so it’s not beyond the realms of possibilities for Oblivion to receive new gameplay tweaks and updates post-launch.

I hope you don’t think I’ve committed a crime with this information. The last thing I need is to be confronted by another Imperial Guard. If you don’t, I recommend you check out more Oblivion Remastered guides that, hopefully, make you happier: Where the Adoring Fan is, how to unlock the Arena, and all Oblivion Remastered console commands & cheats.
