The Call of Duty League’s Major 4 tournament has wrapped, and OpTic Texas walked away with the gorgeous trophy after defeating LA Thieves in a close grand final. It was a monumental event that saw more people attend the arena than ever before, setting a new record for a Call of Duty LAN event, and it set the bar for whatever comes next.
Talking to Activision’s Call of Duty League representatives about the event, I learned that both the number of people in the arena and the number of viewers from around the world topped anything that has ever come before, reflecting the power of an EU-based COD event.
We Need More European Call of Duty Events
The Call of Duty League Major that landed in Paris this past weekend was an incredibly successful event. The crowd was on fire, the competitors were revelling in the atmosphere, and the gameplay was unreal. Every series was a banger, and we saw some major updates take place on that stage in Paris.
Thanks to the Paris Gentle Mates and the organization’s following, this was, by footfall, the biggest Call of Duty event in history, and it’s an indication of the love Europe has for the COD esports scene.
In a statement, the CDL’s representatives explained how two records were broken this past weekend:
Major IV in Paris was a memorable event for the Call of Duty League. More than 40,000 attendees came through the event across the weekend, making it the most attended Call of Duty esports event in history. Thanks to the Paris Gentle Mates, everyone in the arena and viewers around the world were part of an unforgettable experience that also set a new CDL peak viewership record with more than 378,000 concurrent viewers.
The atmosphere throughout the event was electric, and it was incredible to see so many clips shared online of fans celebrating every match and embracing the League with so much energy. We’re excited to carry that momentum into Championship Weekend in Las Vegas as we close out the season and look ahead to what’s next with Modern Warfare 4.
In just a few days, teams will be heading to Las Vegas to compete in the Call of Duty League Championship, the most important event in the annual calendar. Unfortunately, the schedule isn’t the best for European fans, but those with the dedication to tune in will still find time to do so.
