Bungie’s Julia Nardin says a leak claiming Destiny and Marathon will merge is fake, calling the franchises independent despite shared DNA.
The final Destiny 2 expansion recently rolled out. Before its release, Bungie announced it would be the final content update for the game, marking the end of an era. Currently, conflicting stories suggest whether a third Destiny is in development, and one rumor claimed Destiny and Marathon would merge, with vague tests into potentially merging the two into a single IP. However, Bungie’s creative director is shutting that down.
Bungie Says Destiny and Marathon Will Not Merge
In a Twitter post, Julia Nardin urged people not to believe everything they read online and said they are siblings who share a lot of Bungie DNA, but will remain their own unique entities.
As someone who’s worked on both Destiny and Marathon, I can confirm that the “leak” about us merging the two IPs is fake. They share a lot of the same Bungie DNA, but like siblings they’re also their own independent entities. Please don’t believe everything you read online.
As for legitimate Marathon updates, it has been announced that season 3 is no longer being released next week. Instead, Marathon’s next season will arrive in December 2026. The Destiny rumor appeared in a lengthy Reddit post that also claimed Marathon would go free-to-play in December, suggesting this is why the push to season 3 was delayed.
The game’s director, Joseph Ziegler, left Bungie back in July. However, just days later, a PvE addition would see the game’s player count soar to new heights.
