Bungie Announces Layoffs Following The End Of Destiny 2

With the final expansion for Destiny 2 out, reports have circulated that Bungie was set to hold layoffs at the studio. On Thursday, those reports became reality.

Bungie announced via social media that a “reduction in force” was taking place at the studio as part of a reorganization.

It’s Unknown How Many People Are Affected

In their statement on the layoffs, Bungie’s management said they “recognize Destiny 2 fell short of expectations these past several years”. Because of this, hard decisions had to be made.

“Following our final content update to Destiny 2, and with our future projects still in early incubation, we unfortunately could not continue operating at our previous size,” they said.

The statement added that they know the decision has “a profound impact” on those affected by the layoffs. However, they were necessary to “best position the studio now and for the future”.

What that future is, they say, will be shared more later on.

In a memo sent to the team, PlayStation CEO Hermen Hulst said most of the Destiny team and some people on the Marathon team will be let go. As of publication, it’s unclear exactly how many people that is. Rumors suggested that as much as 50% of the company could be let go, though Bungie has not confirmed that.

Insider Gaming has reached out to Bungie and PlayStation for clarification on the number of people being let go.
