There’s something morbidly exciting about exploring the end of the world in a video game.
It’s a bizarre concept, but battling zombies and fighting to survive in a world torn apart by an infection is nothing short of exhilarating – and that’s why the best zombie browser games do so well and are so easily made popular by millions of users.
In this guide, we’re breaking down the top zombie games that you can play for free in a browser right now.
Masked Forces: Zombie Survival
Masked Forces: Zombie Survival is one of the best browser zombie games you’ll ever play.
Since being released by FreezeNova in 2017, this title has transcended simple browser formats. It has been listed on Steam and Xbox, making it one of the most ambitious and successful zombie games you can play in a browser.
It offers a basic gameplay loop that requires players to defend themselves against waves of zombies. However, the real winner here is that it also features multiplayer mechanics.
This is easily one of my all-time favorite zombie browser games.
Why Is This a Zombie Game Worth Playing?
For a free zombie browser game, Masked Forces: Zombie Survival is pretty well built. It features nice animations, a great soundtrack, and plenty of weapons to play around with.
Like other ‘defense mode’ games, it has a fairly basic premise, but it’s addictive and you’ll want to keep coming back to try and beat your personal best over and over again.
It’s worth stressing that while Masked Forces: Zombie Survival is a free browser game, there’s a small price to pay if you want to play it on Steam or Xbox – but this also removes ads.
The mechanics are relatively simple, and as you play, you’ll need to keep your armor and ammunition topped up while taking down endless waves of violent zombies.
It’s not the most gory zombie game ever, but it does okay with character models and an ambience that keeps you on the edge of your seat – enemies can come from anywhere at any time, so you must stay focused.
There’s no doubt that this is one of the best browser zombie games. I’m a fan of the game’s design – the world might be simple but it’s unique to Masked Forces, and the weapons are stylised takes on real-world guns, which is great.
If you get it on Xbox or Steam, you’ll also have achievements to unlock, which is brilliant for completionists.

Apocalypse Z: Survival
Apocalypse Z: Survival is a back-to-basics zombie apocalypse-themed title that relies on one of the oldest and most trusted formats in gaming: wave defense.
In Apocalypse Z, you’ll be forced to start with nothing, defending yourself against waves of bloodthirsty zombies hellbent on tearing you limb from limb. As the game unravels, you’ll need to use various weapons and blockades to protect yourself against the undead.
This game first appeared on PacoGames in 2017 and it has remained fairly popular since then.
It’s a first-person shooter that’s low on visual elements but high on entertainment value.
Why Is This a Zombie Game Worth Playing?
Apocalypse Z: Survival is one of the best zombie browser games because it’s just so simple. It’s free to play and features no microtransactions – but it is powered by ads.
As you explore this game, you’ll be pleased with its simplicity, with the game’s core elements being made up of a requirement to point your weapon in the right direction and take down waves of terrifying zombies.
As the rounds unravel, you’ll need to pick up power-ups and ammunition drops and unlock more weapons to take down increasingly difficult enemies.
It’s not going to win awards for visual design, but it’s a brilliant and basic game to pass the time.
If you’re a fan of the horror genre, you’ll be pleased to know that Apocalypse Z: Survival is genuinely quite a freaky game. Both the sound palette and the designs of the enemies will keep you on edge throughout, which I love.
It’s always nice when the zombies instill a sense of fear in the player.
It might be simple on the surface, but given the near-infinite replayability of Apocalypse Z: Survival, it’s easy to understand why it’s one of my favorite zombie browser games.

State of Survival
State of Survival is one of the most prolific and recognisable zombie browser games on the market. It has been around since 2019, having been created and released by FunPlus International, one of the biggest and boldest names in top-tier browser games.
In State of Survival, players must manage a settlement amid a zombie apocalypse, developing it over time, protecting it from vicious zombies and other players, and going on a series of quests that allow them to expand this post-apocalyptic setting.
It’s a strategy-based game that has proven to be a massive success with millions of players worldwide.
Why is This a Zombie Game Worth Playing?
State of Survival is, in my opinion, the best zombie browser game ever made. It’s a multi-platform title with a phenomenal gameplay loop that never has to end, with players building up their settlement and farming resources endlessly as the apocalypse unravels.
It’s free to play but is supported by microtransactions and ads – but paying for anything in State of Survival is entirely optional.
One of the most attractive things about State of Survival is the game’s visual palette.
It looks flawless on whatever device you’re playing it on. With a lengthy assortment of missions and some multiplayer elements thrown in, you’ll never run out of ways to stay entertained in State of Survival.
Everything from the UI to the buildings you construct in your settlement looks great.
It’s not all about resource management, though – you’ll be expected to take down the undead all the time, using different characters and abilities to cut through zombies with reckless abandon.
It’s challenging enough to keep users on their toes, but it’s not particularly violent, so it’s still appropriate for younger players.
Again, this is probably my favorite zombie browser game on the market, so I’d very much recommend giving it a try.

Dead Frontier
Dead Frontier is one of the oldest zombie browser games still going today, having been released way back in 2008 by ‘Creaky Corpse Ltd’.
It has since remained popular, offering players a unique perspective on the zombie apocalypse.
In Dead Frontier, you’ll be playing either alone or with other users, picking whether you want to play in a 2D or 3D format. You will embark on a journey across an open world filled with zombie hordes and survivors fighting to stay alive.
It has been updated countless times over the years, so it still has millions of registered players.
Why is This a Zombie Game Worth Playing?
Dead Frontier has been alive so long for good reason. It’s a diverse and entertaining title with plenty to offer, from player-vs-player combat to cooperative elements that include a player-run market system and outpost creation.
It started life as a 2D game but quickly pivoted to 3D, but players with a love for a retro zombie game can revert to the older format if they’d like.
Ten years after Dead Frontier was released, a follow-up title appeared online, this one also being free-to-play.
It landed on Steam, offering players a next-generation take on this popular zombie browser game with MMORPG elements.
This top-down shooter is charming, terrifying, and hugely entertaining. It’s a great zombie browser game, which is represented in the number of players it still has after more than 15 years on the market.
If you’re eager to play a game with a solid UI, opportunities to loot and unlock high-tier equipment, and the option to slay through hordes of zombies, look no further than Dead Frontier.
It’s also worth highlighting that this is one of the scariest zombie browser games you’ll play – which is great for horror fans.
Not only are some of the enemies pretty terrifying, but the way the game is viewed means that enemies can come pouring out of a room and you’ll not see them until the last moment. It’s fantastic and can get so intense.

My Favorite Zombie Browser Game
It’s a pretty easy choice for me – I’ve got to pick State of Survival.
There’s just no other zombie browser game that offers the replayability and diversity of this free-to-play strategy game. Dead Frontier comes close, but it just can’t replicate the solid visuals, interesting characters, and more complex mechanics found in State of Survival.
It sits at the top of the table for a reason.
In State of Survival, you’ll be tasked with managing people, resources, and waves of the undead, while also balancing relationships with neighboring settlements and developing your own haven over hours of gameplay.
That’s such a solid offering considering there’s no price tag attached to this game.
