Brazil has just appointed its first-ever National Director of Esports, taking a landmark step towards the country’s legitimization of competitive gaming. This is a move that will align esports closer with traditional sports, something which the country is deeply passionate about.
The federal government confirmed recently that Cadu Albuquerque, who was formerly the president of the Rio de Janeiro State Federation of Electronic Sports, has taken up the inaugural spot in the government.
Brazil Paints a Bright Esports Picture
Brazil is home to some of the most capable esports competitors in the world, and the nation holds teams that compete across a huge array of titles, from Rocket League to Counter-Strike, and from VALORANT to League of Legends.
Cadu Albuquerque, now the National Director of Esports, will work to shape the esports directorate housed within the National Secretariat for Sport Betting and Economic Development of Sport.
That’s one hell of a title.
He now sits within the beating heart of national esports development and will shape public policy, guide tournament initiatives, and help shape Brazil’s overarching competitive gaming strategy.
Previously, Albuquerque held a spot at FERJEE and helped to construct metaphorical bridges between government institutions and partners across the private sector. He has plenty of experience working alongside the likes of ESL FACEIT Group, and his appointment comes at a time when esports is being legitimized in a similar fashion across many countries.
Brazil has a thriving competitive ecosystem, and this is another milestone for the nation, carving a way ahead that many other countries should take inspiration from.
