Currently known under the codename ‘Saturn’, Insider Gaming has learned from multiple sources that Call of Duty 25 is set to take players back to the future. And no, I don’t mean we’ll soon be playing as Marty McFly and the Doc (but never say never), but instead, Call of Duty 2025 is slated to be set in the very slight future. Call of Duty has not had a game set in the future since 2018’s Black Ops 4.
Insider Gaming understands that Call of Duty 2025 is currently in development as a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, being set around 2030 (Black Ops 2 is set in 2025). As such, fans should expect the return of some fan-favorite protagonists as the team faces a new villain following the death of Menendez.
As previously rumored, Black Ops 2 remastered maps will be coming to the game, but recent plans and the scope of the game have changed significantly.
Previously, the intention was to have all of the Black Ops 2 remastered maps released on launch, similar to how Modern Warfare 2’s (2009) maps came back in Modern Warfare 3. However, the current plan now is to launch with new maps and remastered maps in conjunction. Although only one source would comment on the change, it was speculated that the game was likely in response to widespread fan criticism that painted Modern Warfare 3 as a glorified DLC to its 2022 predecessor.
Modern Warfare 3 had just 16 months of development thanks to a lack of higher-up planning and internal changes that led Sledgehammer Games to be under immense pressure and crunch to deliver a premium Call of Duty title on time. The final product resulted in a game with 16 remastered Modern Warfare 2 (2009) maps on launch and a campaign that lasted a few hours. Despite the game’s apparent shortcomings though, it’s been said that the game did tremendously well, with Infinity Ward already well into development on its next Modern Warfare game.
Speaking on other specific details on Call of Duty 2025, which are heavily in flux due to the game’s early stage of development (22 months away at the time of writing), it’s understood that the game is also slated to have an overhaul to its movement system, the return of a classic ‘pick 10’ create-a-class, the gunfight game mode, and another year of round-based zombies.
It’s currently unclear if the ‘Carry Forward’ from Call of Duty 2024, named Black Ops Gulf War, will be incorporated due to the significant time jump and change to the game’s overall strategy. “This is a completely new game,” it was said, suggesting that the game may not.
With Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 being one of the series’ best-selling games to date, officially selling just shy of 30 million units, it makes sense that Activision will once again capitalize on nostalgia, while also giving players new and exciting content.

I for one am very excited about this development
Personally I think the blacks ops and modern warfare series should be put on a shelf while they are still pretty give it a few years and we will have a black ops or modern warfare that has absolutely nothing to do with previous titles I want to see advanced warfare or a ghosts sequel I won’t be buying another cod title till I see it
I hope Treyarch can finally move away from COD after this game go back to making open world games again. Since Sony has Marvel mostly locked up get them the DC license same for Infinity Ward since a ton of Naughty Dog staff work there now. Sledgehammer should rehire Glen Schofield and make successors to Dead Space and Dante’s Inferno. The only COD game they need to support is Warzone.
Wasn’t Black Ops 2 a flop I remember all the Black Ops games after the first flopping. Treyarch should go back to making games like Spider-Man or I guess get the Batman license or Nightwing and do that instead I mean WB Games is trash and Spider-Man’s locked at Sony.
I think they should go to the not so distant past and give me a refund for Modern Warfare 3.
Yeah nah. After Black Ops Cold War integrated Woods and Mason’s operations into Modern Warfare’s timeline, it is simply impossible for a sequel to BO2 exist because MWIII is already set in the 2020s and the technology in it is nowhere as advanced as the technology that was show in BO2, which takes place in 2025. This rumor is fake as hell.
In what ways does the semi-futuristic setting of Call of Duty 2025 differentiate it from previous games in the series? Greeting : Telkom University
I love this idea. As a B02 fanatic I’m overly excited to hear this news. Black ops 2 remastered will make all Mt dreams come true. I’m glad this is happening. I hope it turns into another masterpiece like Cold War and bo2 together. Cold War I’d my current favorite game even know its 3 years old now going on 4 but overall definitely excited ?
hopefully they let us keep our calling cards etc even when they update warzone. So it’s not happening like the old warzone.
