In a new post on Twitter/X, the Baldur’s Gate 3 team announced that the anticipated Patch 7 update will arrive sometime in September 2024, adding official modding tools.
The post adds that a closed alpha begins today, and that a closed beta is coming in July. The Beta will be capped at about 1,000 players. Larian previously announced in April that Patch 7 will introduce the first official modding tools.
During a community update, the devs explained that players will get to “change up visuals, animations, sounds, stats, and more.”
In community update 27 via Steam, the devs elaborated on further details. The devs reiterated plans for fixes, Crossplay, and an in-game Photo Mode. However, they also teased some “anniversary extravagance.”
For Patch 7, the devs confirmed that PC players will be the first to use and install mods. Then, they will be available for “Mac players, as well as PlayStation and Xbox consoles” later on. Today’s post does not confirm exact release dates.
However, fans playing Baldur’s Gate 3 on console will only get to browse existing mods, rather than modding their own. The devs confirmed that “the official modding tools themselves will not be available to those playing on console.”
Today’s post also mentions that the toolkit will include “a subset of our internal development tools.” This will allow players to edit mods, upload to mod.io servers, get access to supported asset types, and more.
Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios also recently announced it is opening a seventh studio located in Warsaw. The announcement comes as Larian looks ahead to two ambitious new RPGs.
