Baldur’s Gate 3 Could Still Come To Xbox, Larian Studios Says

Baldur's Gate Xbox

Updated: Larian Studios has put out an official statement regarding the status of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox:

“Following yesterday’s PS5 and release date announcement, we’ve clarified that right now, we’re planning to release Baldur’s Gate 3 for PC, Mac, GeForce NOW and PS5. That said, we have no exclusivity for which platforms we can bring BG3 to, or when, and will announce support for additional platforms if and when we’re ready.

We’re seeing a lot of varied interpretations of what that means, so we wanted to clarify further. We’ve had an Xbox version of Baldur’s Gate 3 in development for some time now. We’ve run into some technical issues in developing the Xbox port that have stopped us feeling 100% confident in announcing it until we’re certain we’ve found the right solutions – specifically, we’ve been unable to get splitscreen co-op to work to the same standard on both Xbox Series X and S, which is a requirement for us to ship.

There’s no platform exclusivity preventing us from releasing BG3 on Xbox day and date, should that be a technical possibility. If and when we do announce further platforms, we want to make sure each version lives up to our standards & expectations.”

Original: During Thursday’s PlayStation State of Play showcase, it was confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3 was coming to PlayStation 5 and PC on August 31. Conspicuous by its absence was the mention of Baldur’s Gate 3 for Xbox.

In a statement to Push Square, Larian Studios says the team isn’t ruling out the game for Microsoft’s console.

“Right now Larian is planning to release Baldur’s Gate 3 for PC, Mac, GeForce NOW, and PS5,” a spokesperson told the outlet. That said, they don’t have exclusivity and will announce support for additional platforms if and when they’re ready.”

Larian CEO Swen Vincke then took to Twitter to address fan concerns about the game being only announced for a console release on PS5.

“Relax,” he said. “We still aren’t playing the exclusivity game.”

You Can Play Baldur’s Gate 3 Today

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been available for PC players in early access since October 2020. During that time it has seen countless updates and additions in the form of story expansions and character types.

The latest major update, Holy Knight, launched back in December. That update added the Paladin class to the game along with new subclasses. In addition to the new class, a number of new spells and abilities for players as well as increased the level cap to five.

More updates will release between now and the game’s full release in August.

Baldur’s Gate 3 features a brand new story from Larian, the creator of Divinity: Original Sin. The story will see players deal with becoming infected and turning into a corrupted monster.

“As the corruption inside you grows, so does your power,” the game’s description reads. “That power may help you to survive, but there will be a price to pay, and more than any ability, the bonds of trust that you build within your party could be your greatest strength. Caught in a conflict between devils, deities, and sinister otherworldly forces, you will determine the fate of the Forgotten Realms together.”
