In a post on social media, the instantly recognizable (by voice if not by face) Ralph Ineson slammed the news that Ubisoft cancelled an Assassin’s Creed game set after the Civil War. It was recently revealed that Ubisoft canned the game after struggling with the political implications of the source material.
It was suggested by recent insider information that the game would have seen players assume control of a former slave, returning to the Deep South to combat the rise of the Ku Klux Klan.
Canceled Because of the Political Climate of the United States
The canceled Assassin’s Creed game that would have been set after the United States Civil War read like a banger on paper, but it’ll never see the light of day. It was shut down after Ubisoft deemed it too inflammatory, which was expanded upon by our Tom Henderson in recent coverage:
The game would have a former slave protagonist who returns to the South to confront the rise of the Ku Klux Klan. Development was progressing well, and the team seemed pleased with the project. Unfortunately, sources informed Game File that it ceased development due to several reasons. Key among them was the backlash of Shadows’ Yasuke and the political climate of the United States at the time.
In a post on social media, Ralph Ineson, a British actor who played Charles Vane in 2013’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, said:
The ‘once again’ is in reference to him making a post on September 27 with the same core message, that time in backlash against the AI actress, Tilly Norward, who was revealed by Xicoia.
It’s hard to say what Ineson took offence at from this revelation. It could be that the game was canceled because of the political influence, or it could be the fact that it was canceled and he just wanted to play it. It’s most likely the clamping down on what could have been a socially resonant title because of the fear of controversy.
Ineson, who played Galactus in the recent Fantastic Four movie, isn’t known for being outspoken on social media.
