AION 2 is here, and it’s taking the MMORPG world by storm. This free-to-play title blew up in early access, and since it hit the global launch window in October, it has been racking up hundreds of thousands of players, earning a much-deserved moment in the spotlight.
If you’re totally new to AION 2, which many players are, then you’ll know that choosing your first class in AION 2 is difficult, especially if you’ve not played the first AION game. There are eight classes available at launch, but the good news is, there isn’t one ‘meta’ class that everyone should rely on. It all depends on how you want to play the game.
Read on to learn about the AION 2 classes and which you should choose as a new player.
Best AION 2 Classes for New Players
If you’re totally and absolutely new to the world of AION, you’ll be safest picking the Templar class. As a close second, you could consider the Ranger, which is arguably the easiest DPS class to get to grips with. If you’re focusing on becoming a healer, lean on the Cleric class, and Chanter if you want a decent mix of both support and combat abilities.
Here’s a quick run-through of all the classes:
| Class | Best For | Average Difficulty |
| Templar | Beginners who want to survive most fights | Easy |
| Ranger | Beginners who want good damage output | Easy |
| Cleric | Players who want to focus on healing | Easy |
| Chanter | Players who want to do multiple things at once | Medium |
| Gladiator | Players who want to get into the thick of melee combat | Medium |
| Sorcerer | Players who want to focus on high-damage magic attacks | Medium |
| Spiritmaster | Players who want to work with magic and animals | Medium/Hard |
| Assassin | Players who are no stranger to the toughest elements of MMO combat | Hard |
The current AION 2 class roster is expected to evolve, and as the game develops, these difficulty rankings and deliverables might change, but right now, that’s the spread.
Templar: Best Class for Beginners
Many folks are saying that the Templar in AION 2 is the best class for new users, as it’s a role that’s built to survive most fights. It can absorb damage well, controls enemies decently, and makes for a relatively forgiving introduction to the AION universe.
It’s not as effective at killing enemies as some other classes, but it’s not exactly lacking in that area.
If you’re new to MMOs, want an easier solo experience in AION 2, or you want to be generally difficult to kill, then Templar is the safest pick. Don’t grab this class if you want to be the slayer or want to lead dungeon raids though, or if you want any kind of solid ranged abilities.
If you’re more aiming for high-damage builds that can control a fight with ease, you’ll want to opt for Gladiator, Sorcerer, or Ranger. I’d recommend Ranger if you want to keep your distance from enemies, and this is also a great class for anyone trying to play AION 2 solo.

Assassin: Worst Class for Beginners
If you’re coming into AION 2 with visions of playing the Assassin class, you might want to think again. This is the least beginner-friendly class in AION 2, utilizing a tough dual-weapon layout that focuses on melee DPS, putting you right at the frontline in most fights.
You’ll need to have a lot of MMO experience to take full advantage of this class, and you’ll have to understand burst damage mechanics. It’s one of the most challenging classes in the game, but if you can master it, you’ll be positioned as one of the best melee fighters in the entire game.
Can You Change Class Later in AION 2?
You can’t change class once you’ve selected your vocation in AION 2. There are no functions to currently pivot down the line, but you can create a new character and try a different class that way.
I’d advocate for making a couple of characters and trying a few different roles, if that’s possible. It might be that the best class in AION 2 I’ve picked for you doesn’t work out for your playstyle, and that’s just fine.
Everyone is unique!
