The Pokémon Company has revealed a couple of brand new abilities for Mega Evolutions from Legends Z-A, which could redefine the competitive meta in Pokémon Champions.
The Pokémon Champions release date has been confirmed for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, though there is no concrete date for the mobile version which is set to release later this year.
As part of the trailer and release date announcement for the new competitive game, the Pokémon Company revealed the abilities for the Mega Evolutions of Pokémon Legends Z-A starters Meganium, Emboar, and Feraligatr.
Legends Z-A Starters Mega Evolution Abilities Revealed
Mega Emboar is the only one of the trio that hasn’t been given a brand-new ability. The fire and fighting type has been confirmed as getting Mold Breaker, which allows its moves to ignore the opponent’s ability.
This is a relatively useful ability, as it will allow Mega Emboar to surpass abilities like Well Baked Body, Flash Fire, and Sturdy.
Meanwhile, Mega Feraligatr takes advantage of its gained Dragon secondary typing with the new ability Dragonize.
Dragonize is similar to Pixelate, turning Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves and boosting their power by 20%. While it can’t learn Extreme Speed, it does learn high-damage Normal moves such as Thrash, Facade, Uproar, Giga Impact, and Double Edge.
And having these moves be effective against other Dragon types could be crucial in how the Pokémon Champions meta shakes out.
Finally, Mega Meganium may have the most potential with Mega Sol, which allows it to use moves as if the weather were harsh sunlight.
This is extremely powerful with a lot of Grass-type moves benefiting from the weather condition. Solar Beam fires immediately without needing to charge. Synthesis heals extra and Growth, should Mega Meganium learn it, would give +2 in Attack and Special Attack instead of +1. And it ensures that Weather Ball will always be a fire move with the 50% boost, offering great type coverage.
All of this, plus the fact that it will work even if your opponent sets up rain, as shown in the trailer, and the fact that Mega Meganium can get these benefits without giving others’ Fire-types don’t get the usual 50% power boost.
