The original director of Resident Evil has started a new game studio, and it’s now known that they’re working on a high-end AAA title.
Unbound Games was founded in 2022 and began business in 2023. Shinji Mikami, who has worked on games such as the original Devil May Cry, the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4, and, more recently, Hi-Fi Rush, is now the Resident Director at the studio.
The studio’s mission statement notes that they developed “original high-end consumer games to large-scale AAA titles and challenging smaller titles” for users worldwide. The AAA titles are currently being made for PS5, Xbox, and PC.
Masato Kimura’s Previous Comments on Unbound’s AAA Game
Masato Kimura is another name who is working at Unbound. He was a producer on Ghostwire: Tokyo previously. In February 2025, he was interviewed about the new studio and offered some comments on a current AAA title in the works. He noted that the studio works with Unreal Engine 5 and explained the differences between making an AAA game in Japan and overseas.
“I can’t give away any details yet, but it’s a AAA title for high-end consumers. However, to be honest, it would be difficult to do the same kind of work in Japan as overseas AAA titles, which require hundreds of billions of yen and hundreds of people working for five to seven years to create. So, we’re aiming for AAA quality and AA content, which is why we’re creating a title that offers a rich gaming experience and allows you to be completely immersed in its world,” he said.
Insider Gaming will continue to monitor all games coming out of Unbound and will bring any future updates as they become available.
