Bungie Confirms Marathon Will Have Seasonal Wipes Leaving Players ‘With Nothing’

Bungie has expanded on Marathon’s seasonal structure, offering more information about the wipe model that will see player accounts reset every three months. This is a common enough operating model for extraction shooters, and it was popularized with Escape from Tarkov undergoing a wipe every six months or so.

In a new post on social media, Bungie has revealed that, every three months, Marathon will reset, leaving players ‘with nothing to their name’ and forcing them to build up their profile once again.

Marathon Wipes and Gives You a Clean Slate

In the recent article published on social media, Bungie confirmed that Marathon will have wipes, which was already known based on some interviews that surfaced in recent weeks. But now, the team has gone one step further, embellishing the information and letting us know exactly how wipes will work in Marathon.

Per the article:

Each season of Marathon brings a clean slate for the whole community with progression resets. These resets include everyone’s gear, contract progression, faction progression, and player level.

You’ll keep your achievements and ways to express yourself. This includes cosmetics (earned and paid), titles, and other rewards you earn by playing and reaching milestones each season. Your Codex progression also carries over, as unburying the secrets of Tau Ceti takes time.

It was also said that liaison contract progression will carry over, which means you won’t need to reconnect with the game’s factions once every three months.

This reset loop is to enable the game to ‘stay dangerous’, but it’s also a way to make loot feel more meaningful and enjoy a more balanced playing field without worrying about picking up the game down the line and being constantly outmatched by players.

Bungie has confirmed the names of the first two seasons, between which the first wipe will land:

  • Season 1: Death is the First Step
  • Season 2: Nightfall

Nightfall promises to introduce night-time raids to the game, pkunging Dire Marsh into darkness. It’ll also bring along a new Runner Shell, fresh weapons, mods, contracts, and more.
