Hytale has plenty of materials and resources to gather, but some of them, like Softwood, can lead to confusion due to the game mechanics.
Insider Gaming is here to solve any confusion, however, with a breakdown of where you can find Softwood and an explanation of what the material really is.
Best Location to Find Softwood in Hytale

Despite the name, Softwood is not a specific material in Hytale. Instead, there are a few types of wood harvested from trees that fall into the Softwood category.
The majority of trees you will find around the spawning area in Hytale are Oak and Birch Trees, neither of which fit the Softwood requirement. However, there is still one type of Tree in this area that provides the necessary resource: Aspen Trees.
Aspen Trees can be identified by their white trunks and orange leaves and, while they are less common than Oak and Birch Trees in the starting biomes in Hytale, they’re not rare. If you’re lucky, you may also come across an enemy logcutting camp, with a variety of fallen logs to harvest when hostiles are eliminated.
Alternatively, you can get Beech Saplings to plant from the Farmer’s Workbench, which are another source of Softwood and have the added benefit of being farmable at your base, so you can avoid long and potentially dangerous journeys.
What Does Softwood do in Hytale?
Softwood is a type of wood in Hytale that can be used in a variety of ways, including for building and crafting, but, as mentioned above, it won’t appear as an item in your inventory with the same name.
Instead, Softwood refers to the wood harvested from the trunks of specific species of trees, namely, Aspen and Beech trees. With the logs in your inventory, you can craft various items, furniture, and building materials, but Softwood itself has a more generic use in the game.
What is Softwood Used For in Hytale?
Softwood Trunks are a required resource to upgrade the Farmer’s Workbench in Hytale, unlocking more recipes and items to craft.
The Farmer’s Workbench is a valuable item in Hytale, opening the doors to reliable food sources with a variety of fruit and vegetable seeds to craft, which can then be planted and nurtured for crops, along with saplings for various trees, giving you access to more materials without venturing out into the wilderness.
