In April 2023, Dead Island 2 was released after years of delays and development issues. It emerged as a stellar open-world zombie gorefest worthy of the Dead Island name, and it received rave reviews from fans worldwide. The second game ended on something of a cliffhanger, with many assuming that a follow-up title would be imminently revealed.
That day might have just drawn closer. In a post on social media, Dambuster Studios openly teased Dead Island 3 and confirmed that the team is hard at work on a sequel.
Leaving Hell-A
In a recent social post, Dambuster Studios confirmed that more than 20 million players had found their way into the zombie-infested wastes of Los Angeles in Dead Island 2. The milestone celebration was joined by a major tease for Dead Island 3 that effectively confirmed the game is leaving LA behind and heading somewhere else entirely:
The caption on the image, ‘When there’s no more room in Hell-A’, is a reference to the 1978 Romero classic, Dawn of the Dead. For that movie, the tagline read, ‘When there’s no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth.’
There’s an entire world out there ripe for the picking, but the art shown by the team suggests that the current cohort of characters introduced for Dead Island 2 might remain. In the image, we can see Jacob, a charismatic (and slightly bizarre) lead with a penchant for rocking out and giving zero f***s about anything.
In July, a former Dead Island 2 developer addressed the calamities caused by the game’s delay, which saw its development cycle pushed out to around a decade, including studio swaps and abandoned deadlines.
